Environmental Development Program
BEDO undertook Integrated Slum Improvement Project as part of the Dhaka Integrated Flood Protection Project (DIFPP) in January 1999, assisted by ADB. Dhaka City Corporation was the Executing Agency. The project aimed at improving environmental aspects of some selected slums in Dhaka city through motivation and providing training to slum dwellers on use of safe water, sanitary latrines, footpaths, dustbins, street lights etc. The project activities ended in November 2000.
Survey on Measurement of Air Temperature
BEDO conducted a survey on Measurement of Air Temperature in Dhaka City Under the Project “Predict Future Health Risk Posed by Changes in Climate, Land Use and Population” with the Collaboration of Department of Human Ecology, the University of Tokyo, Japan
The major purpose of the survey was to measure the temperature at approximately 40 locations in Dhaka city for a consecutive 24 hours (including night time) to know the variation of environmental condition in an urban area. Later this information will be integrated with health events data to elucidate the effects of temperature variation on various health effects.
One of the major objectives of BEDO is to safeguard the environment from its degradation. In order to conduct research on environment, BEDO established contact with the University of Tokyo and Saga University of Japan. At the invitation of BEDO the professors and researchers of both universities visited Dhaka to discuss with BEDO to undertake a joint research project on environmental health. After elaborate discussions BEDO and the Japanese Consortium for the Health Development Project (Researchers from Saga University, University of Tokyo and National Institute of Health and Nutrition) entered into an agreement on 15 October 2010 with respect to conducting The Environmental Health Project (EHP) in Bangladesh. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Md. Abdul Bari, Executive Director of BEDO, Prof. Tsukasa Inaoka, Dept. of Human Ecology, Saga University of Japan and Prof. Chiho Watanabe, Dept. of Human Ecology, University of Tokyo.
Prof. Chiho Watanabe and Dr. Shinya Yasumoto, Project Researcher, Dept. Human Ecology, University of Tokyo visited BEDO office on 27 November, 2012. Dr. Shinya Yasumoto came to Dhaka from Tokyo on 23 January 2013 with necessary instruments for measuring air temperature. Two female Bangladeshi students who were studying at University of Tokyo accompanied Dr. Shinya to assist the survey teams. BEDO arranged 1 day training session for 40 Supervisor and 120 data collector on procedure of survey i.e. use of thermometer, GPS and Compass, how to take photographs and when exchange one place to another place etc. BEDO conducted the survey 24 hours in selected 40 locations of Dhaka city on 26 January 2013 successfully.
Research work on “Past, Present and Future of Sugar Industry in Bangladesh: An Empirical Study”
BEDO conducted a research work on “Past, Present and Future of Sugar Industry in Bangladesh: An Empirical Study” under the financial assistance of Bangladesh Social Science Research Council (BSSRC) of Planning Commission, Ministry of Planning. The research work was started in April 2010 and completed in May 2011.The research work was conducted in the sugar mills areas of Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Gaibandha, Rajshahi, Pabna, Faridpur, Kushtia and Chuadanga districts. So far 200 sugarcane farmers, 65 molasses producers, 75 high officials of sugar mills, 10 officials of Sugarcane Research Institute, 50 CBA leaders of sugar mills and 75 workers of sugar mills were interviewed through 7 structured questionnaires.
